The annual conference of the Women's Studies Association of Japan was held at Ochanomizu Women's University on June 27th and 28th, 2009. My general impression was that the association was not mired in the 30 years of its history, but was clearly looking ahead to the future. This was evident in the selection of general members for the positions of section meeting supervisors and in the fact that the symposium was held on the last day, not the first day, to sum up the whole conference.

Inter-Asia Cultural Typhoon 2009 was held at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies from July 3 to 5. This year, it was a joint conference with Inter-Asia Cultural Studies that was attended by participants from around the world. Numerous panels and presentations covered diverse topics under the sub-theme "Globalization and Its Fault-Lines: Beyond Poverty, Surveillance, and Censorship." The conference venue was filled with artworks ranging from paintings and clothes to motion videos, and people also gathered outside at the food stalls and music performances. In addition to all the energy and excitement was the tension that is unique to international conferences, and it was clear that a great deal of effort and preparation had been put into this major event. The conference had a scope that transcended national boundaries, and its participants came from diverse backgrounds, in nationality, race, region, class, ethnicity, sex/gender, religion, and disability. This highlighted the growing need to consider diversity and to recognize differences among us, both as a significant perspective in academic debate as well as for self-reflection.

On October 5th, 2007, CGS and the ICU Placement Office co-hosted a seminar entitled “Why Suffer from Job Burnout? Tips for Your Future Career.” The speaker, Ms. Naoko Takayama, discussed the psychological pressures that people face in the workplace and offered advice from a counseler’s viewpoint on how to avoid these problems, based on case examples of her own clients. In order to make the topic accessible for students about to embark on their job hunting and other people interested in the possible problems of the workplace, she used detailed handouts and other interesting devices such as personal checklists to enable participants to identify their own individual issues.

On September 12th, 2007, Sumposion, an LGBIT student group at ICU, submitted a petition to the university, demanding a more LGBIT-friendly campus. The petition included proposals for reform ranging from raising the awareness of faculty members to upgrading facilities such as lavatories and locker rooms.

On October 27th 2007, a General Assembly for the Establishment of the Japan Association for Queer Studies (JAQS) was held at Tokyo University’s Komaba Campus. Close to 300 people braved the terrible weather to attend the session, despite the approaching unseasonal typhoon.

CGS will host a bake sale from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on November 3 and 4th at the ICU Festival. Homemade muffins, cookies, rice crispy treats and brownies will be available for sale. We will also have some fun games for children. We will set up our booth near the university church. Look for our rainbow flag!

Why Suffer from Job Burnout? —Tips for Your Future Career
A lecture co-hosted by the ICU Placement Office and the Center for Gender Studies (CGS)

■ I feel neglected when I’m turned down.
■ When unaccepted by the people around me, I feel like a loser.
■ I experience feelings of despair when things go wrong.

Haven’t you ever felt like this? Haven’t we all? Surrounded by people with different values and ways of coping at school or in the workplace, we can all be subjected to many worries and anxieties caused by problems of communication. Yet, if you let yourself become distraught by every conflict you encounter, you may find yourself forced to deny who you are. Worse yet, you may end up suffering from burnout.

CGS will invite Ms. Aya Kamikawa, a Setagaya ward assembly member, to "Approaches to Gender Studies," the core course of the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies. Elected for the Setagaya ward assembly as an openly transgender candidate in 2003, Ms. Kamikawa was returned for a second term in the election held this April, as the 2nd on the list of all the candidates.
