Sigh. As expected, the revised Basic Education Law has been approved in the Diet. According to the draft law, the revised law will include new phrases such as “civic spirit” and “patriotism.” These changes themselves are cause for concern as they imply a regression toward greater intervention and control of education by the state akin to the prewar Imperial Rescript on Education. However, here I will broaden the scope of the argument and focus, from a gender perspective, on the fundamental principles behind the so-called “Beautiful Nation” advocated by the Abe administration in its revision of the Basic Education Law and other policies.

CGS co-hosted its third international workshop with COE, “Body Knowledge and Gender in Asia,” at ICU from October 6 to 8, 2006. This year, our aim was to explore the possibility of a gender perspective from the viewpoint of “natural science,” following the previous two workshop series on social science (2004) and humanities (2005) perspectives. The workshop brought together a broad range of practical and theoretical “body knowledge” professionals, including sex-education advisors, midwives, researchers of midwifery, medical anthropologists, medical sociologists, scientific historians, and scientific philosophers from Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, India, and Japan.

【This piece of writing, which is available only online, has been written in relation to the article entitled "Constitutional Amendment and Gender" contributed by Ms. Noriko Ishida to the seventh issues of our newsletter.】

“Gender Perspectives on Constitutional Amendment,” a lecture by Ms. Noriko Ishida, was held at International Christian University (ICU), on 23rd September, 2006. Since ICU does not have a Law Faculty, this was a rare opportunity for its students to not only consider Constitutional amendment from a gender perspective, but also to learn about the issue from a specialist in Law. The supplementary handouts and detailed explanations made the lecture accessible to those who are not familiar with Law.

Members of the initial working group towards the establishment of a queer studies association are pleased to announce the formation of The Japan Association for Queer Studies (JAQS), which will be inaugurated in the autumn of 2007. The association aims to provide a forum for dialogue and the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas, in part through an annual JAQS conference and the publication of an annual refereed journal. We welcome membership from not only academics of diverse backgrounds but also from all engaged in discussions of the body, sex, sexuality, gender, and desire. Please see the JAQS website for further details and updated information on membership and forthcoming events.
