Subject
My Place in Academia

It is often said that academia is (or should be) "neutral." Yet, we all have different experiences and positions, and what joys and difficulties do we face when being expected to learn like that at university? This theme may be a bit hard but would you be interested in talking about it in a casual and relaxed way?

We'll enjoy tea and coffee and snacks as we talk about gender and sexuality in a relaxed atmosphere. Worries we've discussed before include:
"I might be attracted to people of the same sex as me"
"I might be attracted to both men and women"
"I have no interest in romance"
"I have a woman's body, but I want to be seen as a man"
"I have a man's body, but I want to be seen as a woman"
"I don't want others to determine my gender for me"
"I don't want to put a label on my sexual identity."

Besides these examples, if you have something else in mind and want to talk it over, please feel free to bring it up. With beverages and snacks prepared, we are waiting for you to come chat with us!

Violets (sumire in Japanese), in the language of flowers, mean sincerity and everyday happiness. Are you being sincere with yourself? If you have a partner, are you treating each other with respect? If you don't have a partner but still want to talk about relationships, or perhaps there is something on your mind about relationships with friends, family, or anyone close to you, please join us. Would you come to Sumire Café and talk about non-violent relationships, dating and love with us? We will be waiting for you with some purple snacks prepared!

Seminar: Is "Japan" "queer"?

Event abstract:
Is "Japan" "queer"? What does "Japan" signify in this question? And how does it affect the creation of meaning about other regions outside of "Japan"? On the other hand, does the term "queer" still carries negative connotations? The term "queer" distanced itself from its originally negative meaning, and has been re-signified into a more positive term, but what does it signify then? This talk attempts to re-contextualize Queer Studies in Japan since the 1990s, and to revisit the question of the image of the other that is produced in relation to gender and sexuality. In order to do so, we take a look at the attempt to transform hentai into something positive, as well as reflect on the tense relationships between national and ethnic borders within the discourse of Japan's gender and sexuality.
